The ArtReach Foundation is honored to have been selected by the Royal Society of Fine Arts of Jordan to be the presenting organization of this unique exhibition, Breaking the Veils: Women Artists from the Islamic World. This exhibition has been shown in sixteen European cities and Australia during the last five years, and ArtReach is pleased to present this important U.S. tour. Omaniat 3.The ArtReach Foundation has joined forces with the Royal Society of Fine Arts Jordan and the Pan-Mediterranean Women Artists Network, Greece (Femme-Art-Méditerranée, or "FAM") to bring this compelling exhibit of art, created by women artists living in Muslim cultures, to the United States. Breaking the Veils is a carefully selected, extraordinary collection of works by women artists who live in Islamic countries as diverse as Indonesia, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. While the work spans a variety of mediums and subject matter, there is a common underlying theme which challenges the typical stereotypes attached to women in the Islamic World. The exhibit contains work by established women artists; some live behind veils, some do not.
Her Majesty Queen Rania-Al Abdullah of Jordan attended the launch of the tour of Breaking the Veils, in Greece, and spoke about the exhibit this way:
Meriam Bouderbala. Untitled.Breaking the Veils features work from 51 women artists from the Islamic world. They work in different media and styles. They have had different life experiences, and they come from more than 20 different countries. But they have something in common that is more important than any dissimilarity. That “something” is the essence of Islamic art, of all art. It is the spirit of creativity and humanity. Real art connects. It connects us with ourselves and one another. It leads us to discover new truths and helps to illuminate the humanity we share. The work of these artists light up not only the Islamic world, but the human world as well. Through this exhibit they are helping to break the veils of misunderstanding and ignorance.
The Clinton Foundation debuted Breaking the Veils at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas June 2008.
This exhibit is an opportunity to create dialogue and educational forums in partnership with local universities, professional associations and cross-cultural organizations. Breaking the Veils not only breaks stereotypes, but encourages discussion beyond the realms of religious and ethnic debate or the politics of war. Curator of the exhibit, and current Jordanian Ambassador to Italy, Her Royal Highness Princess Wijdan states, “Art is a universal language and a fundamental means of communication that enables the convergence of sensitivities and provides the seeds for a genuine understanding of other cultures.”
The U.S. Tour will travel from the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas (June 20 - September 14, 2008) to the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi (October 6 - December 15, 2008) followed by a visit to Washington, D.C. (February 23 - March 15, 2009).
